Rooibos is a plant native to South Africa, also known as "red bush." The leaves of this plant are used to make a reddish, caffeine-free infusion called rooibos tea. Although often called "tea," rooibos is not technically a tea because it does not come from the tea plant Camellia sinensis. Instead, it is an herbal infusion.
Rooibos tea is loved for its smooth, earthy taste, with slightly sweet notes and subtle nutty undertones. It is naturally caffeine-free and is rich in antioxidants and minerals, making it a popular beverage among those avoiding caffeine or looking for healthy alternatives.
Rooibos is often consumed hot, but it can also be served iced or used as a base for herbal tea blends. It can be enhanced with milk, sugar, or honey depending on personal preference. Rooibos is also used in baked goods, desserts, and even beauty products for its soothing and antioxidant properties.
An incomparable, organically grown rooibos from the Cederberg Mountains in South Africa – pleasant, fruity and caffeine-free. A subtle note of mandarin adds to the individuality of this blend.
The rugged beauty of the Cederberg Mountains in southwest South Africa is home to the rooibos plant, or red bush, about
200 km north of Cape Town, around the towns of Clanwilliam and Citrusdal. This is the only region in the world where it grows, so it is no surprise to learn that it is South Africa's national drink.
No one knows for sure how old the red bush is (its Afrikaans name is "rooi" for red and "bos" for bush), but it was first described in 1772 by botanist Carl Thunberg as a medicinal plant used by the Khoisan people.
Unlike black or green tea, rooibos tea contains no caffeine and few tannins, so there is no bitterness in the flavor and you don't have to worry about sleepless nights.
To further refine the flavour of our rooibos, we blended it with a little hibiscus and mandarin, an Asian variety of the most well-known mandarin. The result is a superb tea with a wonderful aroma that can be enjoyed late into the evening.
